Martin Schulz joins labour parade in Warsaw

Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, was guest of honour at a May Day march in Warsaw on Thursday by Poland's left wing parties.

Schulz, who is also the Party of European Socialists' candidate for President of the European Commission in elections this summer, joined trade union and party activists including leader of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) Leszek Miller at the head of the labour parade, as Poland marked 10 years in the European Union on 1 May.
"Warsaw is an important capital in the EU. I have always been optimistic about Poland's role in the EU and I have not been disapointed," the German socialist told TVP television.
Schulz urged Poles to take part in the European Parliament elections on 25 May.
"Let's change Poland, let's change Europe," he said. "I do not want to live in a Europe where speculators earn billions and pay no taxes," Schulz said.
The May Day march, held under the slogan "Work, housing and a decent wage" was attended by a few hundred demonstrators, including members SLD, Poland's largest left wing party, as well as a delegation from the All-Poland Alliance of Trade Unions (OPZZ), the Polish Green Party and representatives of the Kurdish community in Poland.
