17 die from cold over weekend

Seventeen people froze to death over the weekend, bringing the number in Poland to die from extreme cold to 34 since the beginning of the year.

Six died from hypothermia on Sunday, following 11 freezing to death on Saturday, the Government Security Centre has said.
Police data shows that around 190 people die from the cold every year in Poland.
Temperatures plummeted to minus 15 degrees in some areas of the country last week after a comparatively mild December.
Weather forecasters predict that temperatures will rise at the beginning of February to around zero degrees centigrade. (pg)
