On Saturday afternoon at about 4.45 pm local time, the woman attempted to make her way over a zebra crossing in Wolka, south of Lublin.
She was hit by a car, and the driver failed to stop to help the victim.
Dozens of policemen were assigned to track down the culprit.
They concluded on Wednesday that the vehicle involved was a Volkswagen Passat. As it turned out, the owner of the vehicle in question was a 26-year-old police officer.
“The car has been confiscated. It is currently undergoing a detailed inspection,” confirmed Lublin police spokesman Andrzej Fiolek.
The crime of causing a fatal accident and then fleeing the scene is punishable by up to twelve years in prison under Polish law. (nh)
