Poles pay final respects to former PM Mazowiecki

The coffin of Poland's first prime minister after the fall of communism, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, has been laid in state at the Presidential Palace, ahead of his funeral on Sunday.

The 86 year-old Mazowiecki, died on Monday.

President Bronislaw Komorowski has signed a book of condolences in memory of the late politician, alongside First Lady Anna at the chapel of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw.

On Sunday at 10.30 am, the coffin will be taken to the nearby Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist for the funeral service, whch will be attended by president of the European Commission Jose Manuel Borroso.

Mazowiecki will be buried later at his family grave in Laski, near the Polish capital. (pg)
