Three people have been hospitalised in the eastern town of Biala Podlaska after having been bitten by a rabid bat.
Dorota Nosalska, medical director of the hospital in Biala Podlaska, a provincial town near the Belarusian border some 160 km east of Warsaw, told local radio that the incident happened on a farm in the region.
It is assumed that the bat first bit a dog, who then gained symptoms of rabies. Alarmed by the incident, authorities were alerted to the case by villagers after three people were also bitten by the winged mammal.
“The [dog] died near the farmstead, so it was possible to carry out research,” Nosalska said, adding that the results tested positive for rabies.
The three injured parties now await a series of anti-rabies shots. The whereabouts of the bat are unknown, however. (jb)
