Starving horses seized from stud farm

Some 48 horses have been removed from a stud farm in Posadowo, western Poland, in a joint operation carried out by police officers and veterinarians.

Sergeant Przemyslaw Podlesny has informed Polish Radio that the action at the stud continued until about midnight on Saturday, following an inspection the previous day.

Attention was drawn to the matter after an employee at the stud uploaded a film onto Youtube revealing the dire health of many of the animals.

“Police in Nowy Tomysl received a notification concerning appalling conditions in which animals were being looked after,” Segeant Podlesny confirmed.

As many as 278 horses were being kept at the stud, and the most poorly animals have now been removed.

Previous veterinary inspections at the site had not recorded any malpractice.

The owner of the stud farm is a Danish citizen, but he has not been questioned yet.

According to Sergeant Podlesny, police are currently establishing who had been immediayely responsible for the welfare of the animals over recent weeks. (nh)
