Fears of a rabies epidemic have prompted authorities in Rzeszow, south east Poland, to take action.

Three cases of rabies were detected in animals in the Rzeszow area in late June, and when an infected rabbit was found in the city itself, concerns were heightened.
Following recommendations from the Provincial Veterinarian, some eight districts on the outskirts of the city have been ear-marked for action.
Over an initial period of three months, owners of dogs must keep their pets on leads, and cats are to be kept indoors.
Meanwhile, a ban has been introduced on the hosting of any events in the city involving animals , such as dog or cat shows. Likewise, hunting with dogs in the area is forbidden.
Placards with warnings about the virus have been erected across the city, with information about the risks involved.
Cases of the virus in humans – typically caused by a bite – are generally curable, provided that the patient is treated within about ten days of being infected. (nh)
