Heavy snow blights Easter holiday

Over 80,000 homes in the Mazovian province, central Poland, were left without electricity, Easter Monday, after unseasonally heavy snowfall.

Emilia Wieremczuk from the Government Security Centre told Polish Radio that conditions were particularly bad in the town of Minsk Mazowiecki, around 40 kilometres from Warsaw, where 21,000 are without power.

Snow fall was also heavy in the north eastern Podlaskie province with 30,000 households suffering power cuts in the region's main city, Bialystok.

Over 1000 workers are trying to clear roads after over 25 cms of snow fell in central Poland on Sunday and early Monday morning.

Police are calling for extra care to be taken on what are treacherous road in some areas.

Since the morning of Good Friday, police have recorded 162 road accidents with 16 deaths and 232 injuries.

Police add that over 800 people have been arrested for being drunk behind the wheel. (pg)
