Father Popiełuszko was beatified in June 2010, a major step in the process towards sainthood.

The stone which was attached to the priest’s body when it was thrown by his murderers into the Vistula River in 1984 will be brought to the church in the autumn.

In 2000 the church was dedicated by Pope John Paul II to the memory of the new martyrs of the 20th and 21st century, not only Catholics but Christians of various denominations.

The relics of modern martyrs in the Basilica of Saint Bartholemew include the Bible belonging to the Pakistani minister for minorities Shahbaz Bhatti, who was murdered last year, and a missal of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador who was assassinated in 1980. (mk/pg)
