Netherlands restricts access to labour market for Poles

The Dutch government wants to tighten up the rules on labour migrants from Eastern and Central Europe, mainly Poland. One of the proposals is that migrants from EU states who remain jobless in the Netherlands for three months would have to leave the country.

Every day some 200,000 Eastern and Central European migrants pick up strawberries, plant tulip bulbs, build houses or do other jobs that the Dutch refuse to stick their hands in. However, there is a growing discontent with labour migrants in the Netherlands fanned by the media and far-right politicians who accuse Poles of misusing their social benefit system and degrading their neighbourhoods.
