"From the Depths”, an international organisation dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and to the protection of Jewish heritage, decided to honour Poles who risked their lives to save Jews with medals named after Jan and Antonina Żabiński, the former director of the Warsaw Zoo and his wife who gave temporary shelter to some 300 Jews in their villa in the Zoo.

Interviewed by Radio Poland, Jonny Daniels, the organisation’s founder, says: “We decided to honour those who haven’t been honoured before and there’s so many people who deserve it. Here in Poland to save one person took a lot of people and more and more stories are starting to come out. […] This is a mission which serves to rebuild Polish-Jewish relations and also helps the world understand what true Poles really are.”
