The royal residence of Wilanów once used to be well outside Warsaw... but the city has now crept up on the palace and park, and brought all of its problems with it. Because Royal Wilanów is not just about the antique interiors.

"There is the very beautiful baroque palace built as a summer villa by King Jan III Sobieski but there is a huge part of land with beautiful parks and gardens and the reserve of Morysin, so plenty of land which we are supposed to care for."
Some 88 hectares in fact, says Agnieszka Laudy, who headed a EEA-sponsored research project dedicated to a multitude of questions and educational projects concerned with the area's ecosystem.
Among others, the ninety-one species of birds identified there and thirty (!) species of dragonflies indicate that preserving the nature there is no mean feat. Elżbieta Krajewska speaks to Agnieszka Laudy on the recently ended project that hoped to furnish at least some strongholds in the struggle with the ills of urbanisation.
