A welcome sigh of relief could be heard across Poland on Tuesday with news of the EC slashing roaming fees by half and pressing for further reduction to the level of standard rates charged by national operators by the end of 2015.

As Slawek Szefs reports, the latest European Commission data show that 28 percent of vacationers simply switch off their mobile phones while on holiday in foreign destinations.

They simply fear the costs involved. The same can be said of large groups representing the business community, especially smaller enterprises. An alternative was to purchase a number from a foreign telecoms operator.

"Border barriers are disappearing, so we can communicate with Poles who travel or work abroad. […] Now, they will be able to freely use their own numbers with the +48 prefix," says Tomasz Szymanowski from SERWERSMS.PL

Last year, according to the Office for Electronic Communication (UKE), clients of Polish telecoms spent 791 million minutes talking over their mobiles abroad and had sent 539 million text messages, all involving hefty roaming fees for the pleasure or need.
