Margaret Thatcher's death marked a sad day for British conservatives. Poland takes a look back at the Baroness' democratic legacy in Poland.

Flowers and a note are placed at the door of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's home in London. Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher died after suffering a stroke at the age of 87, her family has announced. Margaret Thatcher was Britain's first female prime minister and served three consecutive terms in office from 1979 to 1990. Margaret Thatcher held a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher, of Kesteven in the County of Lincolnshire, which entitles her to sit in the House of Lords. PAP/EPA/ANDY RAIN

Margaret Thatcher firmly supported the Solidarity trade union in Poland, and made the voice of the democratic opposition heard across the world.

Even if Baroness Thatcher fought hard against unions in her home country, in Poland and other Central European countries she is chiefly remembered as one of the three key historic figures, alongside Pope John Paul II and US President Ronald Reagan, whose efforts were instrumental in dismantling communism in this part of Europe.
