It makes sense strategically for Poland's energy mix to also include the development of nuclear energy sector, says Prime Minister Tusk.

Declaration to that effect was made by Prime Minister Donald Tusk following his meeting with the cabinet and representatives of the Polish Energy Group (PGE), the state-owned company selected to build Poland's first nuclear power plant.

The nuclear project has been estimated by PGE to cost 35-55 billion zloty (8-12 billion euro). Opponents of the idea, both among the environmental activists and politicians, argue that even if the number is accurate Poland cannot afford such a project.

"If we compare energy consumption of the Polish and German economies - ours is almost three times that of the Germany! Saving energy or getting rid of high energy consuming devices is three times cheaper than construction of new sources of energy. Let's focus on what's cheapest instead," said former deputy minister of the environment and energy expert Maciej Wilczyński.
