The European Parliament has rejected the controversial global the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement on the grounds that it fails to respect the EU’s fundamental rights. The vote marked the culmination of a two-year battle between legislators who supported the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement and its opponents who say the legislation would punish mainly young and digitally savvy people for sharing films and music online. Elżbieta Krajewska reports.
Cyprus, which has presented the priorities of its six-month rotating EU presidency, which will focus on concluding negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework for 2014-2020 and establishing a Common European Asylum System by the end of 2012. As soon as it had taken over from Denmark, Cyprus also announced it would apply for a bailout making it the fifth euro zone country to request EU rescue funds. Danuta Isler reports.
