  • Diplomatic Bag :: Role of public media in Europe
In this week’s edition, we look at trouble in the Schengen zone, as well as talk to the head of the European Broadcasting Union about the role of public media.

Presented by John Beauchamp

The future of the Schengen Zone , which allows for the free movement of people in many countries of Europe, is being thrown into question, now, as the European Parliament has frozen collaboration in the area of civil protection and free movement with the Council of the European Union, currently under the helm of the Danish presidency.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has issued a declaration in support of public service media’s role in society. The unanimous adoption of the document took place during the 68th General Assembly of the members of EBU in Strasbourg, France. Among the signatories was Polish Radio's chairman Andrzej Siezieniewski. The EBU is Europe’s biggest union of broadcasters. Polish Radio's correspondent in Strasbourg, Andrzej Gebert talked to Jean-Paul Phillipot, the president of the European Broadcasting Union. He asked him first whether the future existence of the public media in Europe was in danger.
