The league, which is now in its second season, is run by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the sport’s world governing body.

Sixteen national teams were gearing up to compete in the annual women's volleyball series, which replaced the World Grand Prix competition.

In addition to Italy, Poland were scheduled to face off against Germany and Thailand in a first series of Nations League matches in the southern Polish city of Opole this week.

After Opole, the Polish women’s national volleyball team will travel to Apeldoorn in the Netherlands and Kortrijk in Belgium for the next rounds of round-robin matches. They will then go to Asia for two more legs of the series.

The Women's Volleyball Nations League finals will be held in China from July 2 to 6, with the top five teams plus the host nation taking part.

The defending champions are the United States, who last year defeated Turkey 3-2 in the league’s final match.

The Poles finished ninth in last year’s Nations League games.

The Polish team on Sunday pulled off a surprise by winning the prestigious Montreux Volley Masters tournament in Switzerland.

Poland earned their first-ever triumph in the event, after frustrating Thailand 3-0 in the semifinals and beating Japan 3-1 in the final.
