The underdogs, managed by ex-Poland boss Waldemar Fornalik, finished four points ahead of defending champions Legia Warsaw to win their maiden title.

In the final round of matches on Sunday, Piast Gliwice beat Lech Poznań 1-0 in a home fixture, while Legia Warsaw drew 2-2 with Zagłębie Lubin at home.

Piast's previous best Ekstraklasa showing was when they finished runner-up in the league’s 2015/2016 season.

Gliwice is a medium-sized city in Poland’s southern Upper Silesia region.
