Almost one in three of those who exercise run regularly, which makes the sport the second-most popular in the country, after cycling, according to the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper.

Seventy percent of Poles say they exercise regularly, the daily reported, citing a survey.

Gazeta Wyborcza also said that marathons organised all over the country are thriving, with some 33,000 runners in the 10 largest such events nationwide last year.

"We have finally reached the kind of sport participation level as that in other European countries,” an expert quoted by the newspaper said. “No one is surprised to see a runner or Nordic walker anymore.”
