Polish short-track skater claims maiden World Cup win

Natalia Maliszewska has become the first Polish short-track speed skater to win a World Cup event, according to media reports.

The 23-year-old on Saturday won the women’s 500 metres at the short-track speed skating World Cup stop in Calgary, Canada.
She finished ahead of Yara van Kerkhof of the Netherlands and Alyson Charles of Canada in the final.
Earlier that day, in a semifinal race, Maliszewska set a national record of 42.587 seconds in the women’s 500 metres.
The Pole on Sunday took fourth place in another 500 metres competition at Calgary, clocking in at 43.732 seconds.
Lara van Ruijven of the Netherlands came first in Sunday’s competition (43.070), ahead of China’s Kexin Fan (43.214) and Canada’s Charles (43.575).
