Włodarczyk, who this year took out the European Championship and a World Athletics Cup title, was awarded the Golden Spikes for the ninth time in her career.

Nowicki won his first Golden Spikes on Tuesday. He took out the top spot in his event at the European Championships and the Athletics World Cup this year.

Sprinter Justyna Święty-Ersetic received a special prize awarded by President Andrzej Duda for the best sportsperson of the centenary of independence year, while sprinter Martyna Kotwiła was named Discovery of the Year.

Lucyna Kornobys, whose disciplines are shot put, discus throw and javelin, and high jumper Maciej Lepiato were named para-athletes of the year.

Since 1970, Golden Spikes have annually been awarded to athletes who each season gained the most points after taking podium places at major competitions, as well as for breaking Polish, European and world records. (vb)
