Volleyball: Poland a step away from world championships semis

Defending champions Poland on Thursday night beat Serbia 3-0 in the final six of this year’s Volleyball Men's World Championships, taking a big step to advancing to the tournament’s semifinals.

The straight-set 28-26, 28-26, 25-22 victory in Turin, Italy, was Poland's second win over Serbia in the championships, which are being jointly hosted by Bulgaria and Italy.
Poland on Sunday defeated Serbia in the second stage of the tournament in a match played in Varna, Bulgaria.
The Polish team lost 1-3 to France and was outplayed 2-3 by Argentina in its previous matches in the second stage of the championships.
Poland beat Cuba, Puerto Rico, Finland, Iran and Bulgaria in the first round of the championships.
The Poles, managed by Belgian coach Vital Heynen, were on Friday set to play Italy in their 10th match of the tournament and were just one step away from making it into the medal round.
Poland won the world championship title in 2014.
The 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championships run until September 30.
The FIVB volleyball federation is the sport's international governing body.
