Athletics: Gold and silver for Polish hammer throwers in Berlin

Nowicki won the event with a best throw of 80.12 metres, while Fajdek was runner-up thanks to an effort of 78.69 metres.

Hungary’s Bence Halasz took bronze with 77.36 metres.

Polish sports bosses have said they are hoping for eight medals at the European Athletics Championships, which are being held in the German capital from August 6 to 12.

A record 86 Polish competitors are taking part in the championships.

Poland finished top of the league in terms of medals at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016, with six golds, five silvers and one bronze.
