"My adventure with the national team has come to an end," the 33-year-old footballer, who plays for German side Borussia Dortmund, wrote on Facebook.

Piszczek made his debut for Poland as a senior in 2007, earning 65 caps and scoring three goals.

He said: "Sometimes in life you have to make hard but rational decisions. After long reflection, I’ve made such a decision.”

Poland disappointed fans after failing to advance to the knockout phase of the recent World Cup in Russia. The squad lost 1-2 to Senegal and 0-3 to Colombia in the group stage.

The Poles won their final game, beating Japan 1-0, but finished bottom of their Group H.

Following their early exit from the tournament, Jerzy Brzęczek took over as Poland manager, replacing Adam Nawałka.
