“I'm in better form than in the good old days... when I raced in Formula 1,” the driver told Poland’s PAP news agency.

Kubica, the first Pole to compete in Formula 1, was forced to take a break from the sport after a serious crash in a rally car in 2011 in which he injured his arm, shoulder and leg. He then started a long road to recovery.

Kubica admitted that Formula 1 racing has moved on since he was last a competitor, including changes in rules, engines and tyre sizes.

"It would be easier to say what has not changed, but the fact is that the whole heart and quintessence of Formula 1 is the same. It is the highest category in the world when it comes to motorsports," he said.

Kubica competed for Renault in 2010, scoring three podium spots in his season with the French manufacturer.

He returned to Formula 1 this season as a test and reserve driver for Britain's Williams team.
