Football: Poland stunned by Senegal in World Cup opener

Poland’s national football team lost 1-2 to Senegal in its first game at the World Cup in Russia on Tuesday.

The match in Moscow marked Poland’s return to World Cup action after a hiatus of 12 years.
Poland conceded an own goal from defender Thiago Cionek in the 37th minute and saw Senegal double the lead through their striker M'Baye Niang in the 60th minute.
Midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak scored a header for Poland from a free kick in the 86th minute.
Poland next take on Colombia and Japan in the group stage of the tournament in Russia.
Manager Adam Nawałka's men are scheduled to play Colombia in Kazan on Sunday and face off against Japan in Volgograd next Thursday.
During the Polish team's meeting with President Andrzej Duda in late May, Nawałka said that the national squad wanted to “achieve the best result possible” in Russia, “but we do not intend to make any promises” because “there are no weak players” in the World Cup.
Poland’s previous World Cup appearance was in Germany in 2006, when they did not get past the group stage.
Poland finished third in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany and were also third in Spain in 1982.
