America’s Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins won the gold. Sweden took the silver and Norway the bronze.
Last week, celebrated cross-country skier Kowalczyk finished a distant 22nd in the women’s individual classic sprint.
Kowalczyk has five Olympic medals and eight world championship medals to her name, but has been struggling to return to top form ever since she was diagnosed with depression in 2014.
