The German pair of Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt claimed the gold in the men’s doubles luge on Wednesday, retaining the title they won at the Sochi Games in Russia four years ago.

Peter Penz and Georg Fischler took the silver for Austria, while German pair Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken rounded off the podium, adding to their country’s lead at the top of the Pyeongchang Games’ medal table.

Germany led the nations’ table after five days of competition in South Korea, with seven gold medals, two silver and three bronze.

The Netherlands was the runner-up, with five gold, four silver and two bronze, and the United States was third, with four gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

Poland has yet to win a medal at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

Polish Sports and Tourism Minister Witold Bańka said ahead of the Games that it was realistic to expect that Polish athletes would bring home two to three medals from South Korea.

Poland won six medals, four gold, one silver and one bronze, during the previous winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, in 2014, Poland's best Olympic Winter Games tally.

Four years earlier in Vancouver, Canada, Poland also scooped up six medals: one gold, three silver and two bronze.

Bańka has named ski jumping as Poland’s biggest chance of an Olympic medal at Pyeongchang.
