Heynen succeeds Ferdinando De Giorgi, an Italian who was fired after Poland crashed out of the European championships last year.

Heynen landed the job after beating two local contenders, Piotr Gruszka and Andrzej Kowal, the Polish volleyball association, PZPS, said on Wednesday.

Heynen has said he plans to work with Polish assistants and learn Polish to better communicate with players, according to reports.

Poland will face off against Bulgaria, Iran, Cuba, Finland and Puerto Rico in the first round of the men’s volleyball world championships in Bulgaria and Italy in September.

The Polish team won the world championship in 2014 under French coach Stephane Antiga.
