Stoch on Saturday won the Four Hills tournament in Germany and Austria, becoming the first Pole and second person ever to win at all four of the competition's venues.

He is also in the top spot on the ski jumping World Cup leaderboard.

Readers of Przegląd Sportowy, who voted by post, online and by text message, put Polish football captain and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and hammer throw world champion Anita Włodarczyk, who was recently named women's athlete of the year by a US sports magazine, behind Stoch.

Others on the list included world number two doubles tennis player Łukasz Kubot and men's hammer throw champion Paweł Fajdek.

Przegląd Sportowy gave special awards to ski jumpers Piotr Żyła, Dawid Kubacki, Maciej Kot and Kamil Stoch for Team of the Year, and to their trainer, Austria's Stefan Horngacher, for Coach of the Year.

Tomasz Gollob, who in 2010 became an Individual World Champion in speedway and who last year was paralysed in an accident, was named Superchampion, while the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year title went to visually impaired runner Joanna Mazur, who won the T11 1,500-metre race at the world championships last year.

The 2017 World Games, which were held in Wrocław, southwestern Poland, were named the sporting event of the year. (vb/di/pk)
