Poles to attempt K2 in winter

Two Polish expeditions have set up camp 6,000 metres above sea level ahead of their attempt to climb K2, the world’s second-highest summit, which has never been done in winter.

The seven mountain climbers are resting and waiting for good climbing conditions before attempting K2’s 8,611-metre summit.
If successful, Poland’s Andrzej Bargiel intends to ski down the mountain.
The Polish expeditions are part of a Polish Winter Himalayan Mountaineering training programme which aims to increase know-how.
K2 is the last of the eight-thousanders yet to be conquered in winter.
The eight-thousanders are 14 mountains in the Himalayan and Karakoram mountains in Asia with summits in the “death zone”, where there is not enough oxygen to support human life, generally found eight kilometres above sea level.
Polish Himalayan winter mountaineers are among the best in the world, and were the first to ascend ten of the 14 highest summits in winter. (vb/pk)
