Polish adventurer home after South Pole solo trek

The first Polish woman to reach the South Pole on foot received a warm welcome after returning to her home country on Tuesday.

Małgorzata Wojtaczka was greeted by family and friends at Warsaw’s Chopin Airport after her 69-day solo trek covering a distance of over 1,200 km
The 51-year-old resident of Wrocław, south-west Poland, pulled a 100kg sledge from the Ronne ice shelf. Towards the end of her trip she began to run out of food.
Braving temperatures of below minus 30 C, she reached the South Pole last Wednesday.
The first woman to reach the South Pole unassisted was Norwegian Liv Arnesen, who skied there in 50 days in 1994.
The first Polish man to reach the South Pole solo and on foot was Marek Kamiński in 1995.
