The 51-year-old resident of Wrocław pulled a 100kg sledge from the Ronne ice shelf at the edge of the continent.

She reached the South Pole at 12:00:05 UTC (1:00 pm CET) on Wednesday.

In her last blog post uploaded on her website, Wojtaczka said that she was nervous about whether she would make it to her destination. “I am very tired. The air temperature is below -30 deg. C, and this quickly drains my energy. Additionally, the wind at night reaches five on the Beaufort scale (around 40 km/h), approximately four B in the morning. […] I cannot go faster than about a kilometre per hour,” Wojtaczka wrote.

The first unassisted woman to the South Pole was Norwegian Liv Arnesen who skied there in 50 days in 1994.

The first Pole to reach the South Pole alone was Marek Kamiński in 1995. (rg)
