Some 25 km from the finishing line Majka, riding for the Tinkoff team, broke away, accompanied by Pantano.

The Colombian could not match the Pole’s pace during a climb, but caught up on a downhill stretch and managed to overtake Majka at the finishing line.

The Pole, however, regained the polka-dot jersey for best climber.

In the overall classification, Britain’s Christopher Froome, of the Sky team, held onto his top spot. (pk)
