Małgorzata – known as “Margo’ in Australia, where she lived – died after collapsing at her home in Brisbane last week. Although rushed to hospital, doctors were unable to rouse her from a coma.

“The funeral will definitely be held in Zabki, between the 11 and 17 June,” affirmed Katarzyna Dydek, Margo’s sister.

“For the time being, a farewell has been held for closest family and friends in Australia,” she added.

“The most important thing is when the urn with Margo's ashes gets to Poland,” she said.

The star player was four months pregnant when taken to hospital. She is survived by her husband and two sons.

Margo Dydek was part of the Polish team that won the European Championships in 1999, and had lived in Australia for several years. She retired in 2008, after a spell playing for the Los Angeles Sparks. (nh/pg)
