Radwańska's spell of fine form had seemed set to continue, with the World No.2 taking the first set, 6-2, and the quarter-final apparently firmly in sight.

But Bacsinszky, currently ranked No. 20 by WTA, managed to turn the tables, wasting little time in breaking the Pole's serve in the second set.

Even when I wasn't playing quite well in the first set, I told myself, it might be a long match,” Bacsinszky said after wrapping up the match.

So I always tried to get a little more balls in and make her work,” she added. (nh)
