We played against a very worthy opponent, and the match gave us a lot material [to build on],” said coach Adam Nawałka after the final whistle blew at the Municipal Stadium in Pozńan, western Poland.

“I'm pleased with the attitude of the team – we saw a lot of actions played on a high level,” he enthused.

Former captain Jakub Błaszczykowski, who has been dogged by injuries over the last two years, proved his mettle by scoring Poland's only goal of the match.

He found the back of the net 28 minutes into the first half with an assured shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Poland's first EURO 2016 match is set for 12 June in Nice, south eastern France, against Northern Ireland. Other rivals in Poland's Group C are Germany and Ukraine.

The Polish team has three more friendlies in store before the tournament, against Finland, the Netherlands and Lithuania. (nh)
