Polish tennis star Agnieszka Radwańska has said she sometimes prefers to play when ill rather than taking medication which could turn out to contain a banned substance.

Radwańska, currently No. 3 in the WTA rankings, was speaking after Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova failed a drug test at the Australian Open.

"I’m very afraid myself when taking medication of some sort,” Radwańska said.

“I know perfectly well that each pill could contain something forbidden. That's why when I'm sick I take tried and tested preparations or don’t take anything at all. Sometimes I even prefer to play with a cold," she added.

The Polish player called Sharapova’s failed drug test "a very sad day for tennis.”

But she added: “I also do not read e-mails that come from WADA. That’s the job of my doctor and agent."

Sharapova said she failed her drug test due to a substance called meldonium, which she added she was taking for health reasons.

Meldonium can enhance athletic performance and was recently banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). (pk)
