Polish climbers abandon record attempt in Himalayas

A team of Polish climbers that planned to scale Annapurna IV in Nepal has decided to discontinue their expedition due to excessive snowfall, very low temperatures, a high avalanche risk, and gale-force winds.

Marcin Tomaszewski, a member of the three-men team, has written on Facebook that any climbing activity on the southern face of the mountain would pose too high a risk.
The goal of the expedition was to set foot on Annapurna IV, climbing its south-western buttress, a feat which has never been achieved in winter time.
Over sixty climbers have been killed along the route, which is said to be one of the most dangerous in world mountaineering. (mk/nh)
