Poland's Jerzy Janowicz got off to a flying start in Cincinnati's Western and Southern Open, defeating Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-4, 7-5 in the first round of the US tournament.

With the Pole currently ranked No. 51 by ATP and Monfils No. 14, the odds appeared to be stacked in the Frenchman's favour.

However, Janowicz served consistently, winning some 92 percent of his first-serve points in the match.

The 24-year-old was ultimately able to wrap up the clash in one hour and twelve minutes.

Janowicz will most probably face US player Jared Donaldson in the next round. Donaldson was leading in the decisive set Nicolas Mahut when play was suspended owing to rain.

The Polish player has not had his best season so far this year. The one-time Wimbledon semi-finalist was knocked out in the first round of the London tournament. He also fell at the first hurdle in Montreal last week during the Rogers Cup. (nh/rk)
