Sonik, who is defending champion this year, had no easy ride in the stage, however.

''There was such a wind blowing that my roadbook got rippped off, and navigation is incredibly complicated in this rally,'' Sonik said after wrapping up the stage.

Meanwhile, in the car category, Marek Dąbrowski and Jacek Czachor are in 8th place, while Adam Małysz and Rafał Marton are in 11th.

Jakub Piątek is coming 9th in the motorbike category.

Rafał Sonik won the world's most challenging off-road event, the Dakar Rally, this January, after narrowly missing the title on several occasions.

Three more stages, taking in 1000km in total, remain ahead of the riders in Sealine Cross Country Rally. (nh)
