Schmiedlova wins Katowice Open

Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova won her first ever WTA title on Sunday, with the No. 8 seed beating Italian challenger Camila Giorgi in the final of the Katowice Open, 6-4, 6-3.

''I'm very happy,'' the winner exclaimed after wrapping up the match, adding a special thank you for her mother, who was in Katowice.

''It was a great tournament for me.''

Polish fans had been keeping fingers crossed that the title would go to No. 1 seed Agnieszka Radwańska this year.

However, the Pole was knocked out by No. 3 seed Giorgi in the semis. (nh)
