The 24-year-old, who was competing as part of the Etixx-Quick Step team, ended the 8-day race across France behind Australia's Richie Porte, who won the title for the second time.

Dubbed 'the race to the sun' on account of its finish on the French Riviera, the challenge took in 1145 km.

Kwiatkowski, who became the first Polish cyclist to win the UCI Road Race World Championship in 2014, is currently third in UCI's world road cycling rankings.

No Pole has ever won the Paris-Nice race, which was first staged in 1933. Frenchmen have triumphed 21 times on their home turf. (nh)
