The 27-year-old from Olsztyn, northern Poland, became the new UFC women’s strawweight champion when she trounced Carla Esparza in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday night.

I was working so hard on my wrestling, but no one believed in me,” Jędrzejczyk said after her triumph.

I am a confident person, and I said that I was going to do this, that I was going to be a new champion, and I did it, you know?”

The timing could not be better for the sport in her home country, as the UFC comes to Poland for the first time next month, on 11 April at the Kraków Arena.

The UFC launched its first division for female fighters in 2013.

Strawweight takes in competitors between 48kg and 52 kg, and is one notch below flyweight, yet above atomweight. (nh)
