Kubica finished just under 15 minutes behind race leader Sebastien Ogier, who won with an overall race time of 2:55:30.5.

However, Kubica told Polish Radio that “I didn’t expect that we would be so close to the leaders in Sweden and that we would be able to fully compete [with the top drivers]”.

“I’m sure that experience and lessons learnt from the races here in previous years helped,” he said.

Robert Kubica had glitches with the car during the rally, with problems affecting the rear differential during the seventh special stage. The Krakow-born driver did manage to win one special stage during the rally, however.

“It’s a shame we had these problems, but I can be pleased not only because of the victory in the special stage, but also due to the pace we manage to drive […],” Kubica added.

Robert Kubica was Poland’s first-ever driver to compete in Formula 1, although his career was cut short after a serious accident during the Ronde di Andore rally in Italy in 2011.

After over a year of rehabilitation, he decided to retire from F1 and since 2012 has been on the WRC circuit. (jb)
