Poland beat Gibraltar 7-0 in their first Group D qualifying match for Euro 2016, with star striker Robert Lewandowski scoring 4 goals in the away fixture.

Given that Sunday's game was the British territory's first ever top level football match, Poland was expecting no less than a thumping victory.

Poland took just ten minutes to score, with Kamil Grosicki first to find the back of the net.

But the second goal was slow in coming, with Grosicki eventually delivering the goods again in the first few minutes of the second half.

“We didn't play quite so well in the first half, but after the break it was great,” Lewandowski told Polish Radio.

“We need to be consistent, regardless of the result and what's happening on the pitch,” he added.

Poland's next Group D qualifier is at home against Germany on 11 October.

Only the top two teams in the group will qualify automatically, although there is a chance that the third-placed team will go through, if it performs well in play-offs with stragglers from other groups.

Besides Gibraltar and Germany, Group D consists of Scotland, Georgia and the Republic of Ireland. (nh)
