The match was attended by 63,000 fans, a record for the volleyball world championships. The figure beats the previous record set as far back as 1952, when the volleyball championship final in Moscow was attended by 50,000 spectators.

The National Stadium in Warsaw also informed that Saturday’s opening match marked a record attendance at the venue.

In 1952, the second volleyball world championships were hosted at the Dynamo Moscow stadium, with the USSR beating Czechoslovakia 3:0 in the final.

Following Saturday’s victory, the Poland squad now moves to Wroclaw where it will play out the rest of its Pool A matches against Australia, Cameroon, Argentina and Venezuela.

This year’s volleyball world championships are being hosted in Poland, with 103 matches set to played out in Warsaw and Wroclaw, as well as Krakow, Bydgoszcz, Lodz, Gdansk and Katowice.

The final is set for 21 September in the Spodek arena in Katowice. (jb)
