The 24-year-old, who renewed his contract with Tinkoff Saxo this month, seems to be showing no signs of fatigue, despite winning both the Tour of Poland and the mountains classification of the Tour de France over the last four weeks.
“It was a very fast start of the stage and covered 50 kilometres in the first hour of the race supported by a strong tailwind,” commented Tinkoff Saxo DS Lars Michaelsen.
Defending champion Tejay Van Garderen (BMC Racing Team) won the 155km stage, and the American has now moved into first position in the general classification.
The USA Pro Cycling Challenge spans 7 stages, beginning in Aspen and ending in Denver.
The race was first held in 2011, and so far, only American cyclists have managed to win the event.
This year's edition is due to end on Sunday, 24 August. (nh)
