Kerber's straight set victory cut short a winning streak for the Polish player, who took the Korea Open title in Seoul over the weekend.

Although Radwanska has now been forced to bow out, the Tokyo tournament did bring her some consolation.

Her third round victory yesterday against Dominika Cibulkova marked her 400th win on the ITF Women's Circuit and at WTA level.

When tipped off by journalists about this, Radwanska was surprised.

“Really?” she said, as cited by WTA's official web site.

“It feels like it was yesterday when I got 300!”

Meanwhile, the 24-four-year-old scooped 49,000 dollars for making it to the quarter-finals. It was her sixth successive year of reaching the stage. She won the women's title in Tokyo in 2011, and was runner-up in 2012.

This years semi-final clashes will be between Angelique Kerber and Carolina Wozniacki, and Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova. (nh)
